How to install a newel post installation guide

Want to know how to install a new post? To avoid stair fitting issues use a roofing square (not a level) to square newels to treads during stair assembly. If points 1-3 are followed correctly the top, bottom and intermediate newel posts will always be plumb and level when the flight is fixed.

1.

When installing the newel post, fix it to the string ensuring the dowels are installed to draw the newel tight to the string shoulder.

2.

Use a roofing square to check the install newel post is square to the adjacent tread – never use a level. Then temporarily support the newel whilst the bottom step/riser is fitted.

3.

Fix the bottom step/riser - these will hold the newel post in the correct position.

4.

Before fixing the stair in position. Once done, you have successfully installed a newel post.
